Allen Bernstein earned a B.A. from California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from UCLA. He taught Mathematical Logic and other Math classes at the University of Maryland for many years. He did some of the early, innovative work in a field of Mathematics called “Non-Standard Analysis.”
In later years, Allen researched the US tax laws and wrote a Tax Guide specifically for college professors. It covered things like how to handle royalties from book sales, honorariums from giving a talk, expenses of a visiting professor, sabbatical moving expenses, etc.
Allen told his sons the story in the book “Lunar Cars & Magic Words,” as well as other imaginative bedtime stories when they were young.
